MONDAY, JUNE 29: Leading the Way to Hope ~ A Community Conversation about Racism in the United States of America
With the Dominican Center at Marywood village
Regardless of the topic, engaging in difficult conversations is challenging for many of us. Racism in the United States of America is one conversation that is long overdue, but one that many of us don’t know how to approach. The search for truth and meaning that can lead to greater understanding is oftentimes filled with anxiety and fear – ultimately hindering our own growth. Our response to those who believe differently than us encourages the status quo, whether our natural response to conflict is anger, withdrawal, or someplace in between.
But is there another approach? Is there a way to bridge our differences with compassion and kindness?
The Dominicans’ study of St. Dominic’s life and his approach to difficult conversations reveal his fundamental belief that all people have a truth to be discovered and honored. His trust in the goodness of life allowed him to hold strangers and adversaries with an open mind. St. Dominic’s encounters and his relationships demonstrated his ability to listen and to engage in open dialogue, which led to greater understanding. This practice has become known among Dominicans as disputatio, or contemplative dialogue.
disputatio: (dis·pu·ta·tio | \ ˌdispəˈtätēˌō \)
Through disputatio we listen without judgment while also holding empathy in our hearts, even when differing viewpoints are present. Disputatio offers a portal, or entry point, to begin difficult conversations, all the while being attentive to where the Spirit is already at work. Transformational opportunities are always unfolding and how we respond to them is key.
In the spirit of St. Dominic, we invite you to join us on Monday, June 29, from 10:30 am - Noon to learn more about disputatio. We will also enter into small and large group conversation as a way to encounter each other first in our humanness, then as a search for the truth that longs to be born.
