Summer Solstice Celebration June 21 in St. Francis Sculpture Garden

Spiritual Sacred Practices

Wednesday 06/21/2023

The word “solstice” ultimately derives from the Latin solstitium, which comes from the parts sol “sun,” and sistere, “to stand still.” During the June solstice the sun reaches its northernmost point in the sky, and for a brief period of time the Sun’s path does not change. The summer solstice is the astronomical beginning of summer and is the day with the most daylight in the year.

The third annual St. Francis Sculpture Garden’s Summer Solstice event will take place on Wednesday, June 21 at 7:00 pm. This celebratory evening will begin with a prayer of welcome from President, Dr. Patrick Bishop and acknowledgment of the land from Sculptor and Founder, Mic Carslon.

Sister Mary Navarre, OP, Director of Archives, will share the history and relationship between St. Francis and St. Dominic.

The sounds of creation will be accompanied by live music set to serenade the community as we usher in an evening of peace, presence and celebrate the light of the sun. Welcoming musicians: Tom and Marcia Good, Rick Reuther, and Mike Lutley.

This event is free and open to the public. Feel free to bring a chair.

Parking is available along the driveway off Fulton Street (currently construction entrance, but is open to guests in the evening) and at the end of the Marywood parking lot at 111 Lakeside Drive.
