Sister Chela Gonzalez, OP
Educator and Artist
Sister Chela Gonzalez, OP, was appointed Vocations Director for the Dominican Sisters ~ Grand Rapids in July 2016, after three years of being on the vocations team. For more than 30 years she has served in a variety of ministries at both the parish and diocesan levels.
Sister Chela's leadership experience includes acting as Diocesan Director of the Office of Catechesis for the Diocese of Boise. She also served in the Archdiocese of Santa Fe, where she met the Dominican Sisters. Other ministerial experiences include Director of Permanent Deacon Formation for the Diocese of Fort Worth and Catechetical Formation in the Archdiocese of San Antonio. At the parish level, Sister Chela has served as a Pastoral Administrator, Director of Religious Education, Director of Youth Ministries, and has taught in Catholic schools.
Although she has never taken an art course, Sister Chela considers herself an artist. She attributes her artistic talents to her parents who encouraged her siblings and her by making up games that included drawing. Sister Chela is also fluent in both Spanish and English.
