Oils: A Little of This, A Little of That
Mary Marin
After years of teaching English and Spanish in the U.S. Virgin Islands, then working in corporate America here in Grand Rapids for 20 years while raising three terrific children, I am now relaxing and enjoying my retirement, sharing time with my friends, family, and fellow artists. I am grateful for Grand Valley Artists, a local club that offers us such an amazing opportunity to work alongside other artists several times a week.
My primary goal these days is to create paintings that the viewer can connect with and enjoy. To do this, I try to be mindful of the four key elements of a good painting: accurate drawing, a variety of values, the right colors, and a variety of hard and soft edges. I strive to paint in an “Impressionist” style, as the great Impressionists have given us, in my opinion, the most beautiful paintings. I am indebted to Ken Cadwallader, with whom I have studied for about 6 years, and the many artists at GVA who are willing to share their expertise with me.
